Santorini, Greece: A Complete Island Travel Guide
Blue domes, volcanic beaches, and the world's most photographed sunsets — how to make the most of Santorini without the crowds.
Every photograph of Santorini looks like a screensaver, which makes it easy to dismiss as overrated. It isn’t. The caldera views from Oia at sunset, the black-sand beaches of Perissa, the ash-white villages clinging to cliff edges — all of it delivers.
Best Villages to Base Yourself
- Oia — The postcard village. Stunning but expensive; book 6+ months ahead in summer.
- Fira — The capital. Most affordable, great transport links, vibrant nightlife.
- Imerovigli — Quieter than Oia, equally dramatic caldera views, fewer tourists.
- Akrotiri — Near the lighthouse and red beach; best for archaeology fans.
Must-Do Activities
Walk the Fira-to-Oia cliff path (10km, 3–4 hours) for caldera views most tourists never see. Take a boat trip to the active Nea Kameni volcano and swim in the warm sulphur springs. Visit the Akrotiri archaeological site — a Minoan Bronze Age city preserved under volcanic ash, sometimes called the “Greek Pompeii”.

When to Visit
Shoulder season wins every time. April–May and September–October offer warm weather, open restaurants, and crowds at maybe 40% of July–August levels. Prices drop significantly and you’ll actually be able to take that iconic sunset photo without 500 other people in frame.
