Europe has a reputation for being expensive. Paris, Zurich, Scandinavia — yes, those will hurt your wallet. But Europe is a continent of 44 countries, and half of them offer extraordinary experiences at a fraction of the cost people assume. Here’s how to do Europe properly without spending a fortune.

Go East

The Eastern European sweet spot: Poland (Kraków, Gdańsk), Hungary (Budapest), Czech Republic (Prague outside summer), Romania (Transylvania, the Danube Delta), Serbia (Belgrade), and North Macedonia (Ohrid). These countries offer medieval architecture, rich food cultures, excellent craft beer, and daily budgets 40–60% lower than Western Europe.

Transport Hacks

  • Flixbus / Eurolines — Intercity buses are 60–80% cheaper than trains and often direct.
  • Interrail / Eurail passes — Only worth it if you’re moving every 1–2 days. Calculate carefully.
  • Budget airlines — Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet connect hundreds of smaller airports. Book 6–8 weeks out for best prices.
  • Night trains — You save a night’s accommodation while covering distance. The Nightjet network (Austria/Germany/Italy) is excellent.

Free Attractions in Every City

Most of Europe’s best museums have free days or free permanent collections. London’s British Museum, Paris’s Musée d’Art Moderne, Berlin’s Topography of Terror, Rome’s Borghese Gallery (book ahead) — all free or near-free. Every major city has a free walking tour (tip-based); these are often the best orientation of any destination.

Accommodation

Hostels have transformed. Modern hostels in Europe are architecturally interesting, socially active, and often in prime locations. A dorm bed in Kraków or Belgrade costs $8–15. Private rooms in hostels undercut hotels by 40–60%. Apps: Hostelworld, Booking.com (filter by price + rating).
